Special Characteristics

Special Characteristics are identified and safeguarded to implement safety goals, official approvals, reduce recalls and rejects, reworking, defective components, and assembly faults.

Special Characteristics are identified, specified, and tolerated in the product development process. They are used to present information on the properties of the system or a component that require special safeguarding in the process. According to the FMEA Handbook by AIAG/VDA, “In the Design FMEA, the Filter Code column replaces the Classification column because Special Characteristics are not required to be shown in the DFMEA. The Process FMEA contains the column titled “Classification”. This column may be used to specify Special Characteristics (i.e., critical, key, major, significant) that require additional process controls.”
