Design FMEA

Design FMEA (failure mode and effect analysis) aims to identify technical risks of the analysis object during development (product/system design) and minimize them via prevention and detection actions.

In a Design FMEA, the concepts and designs of systems, assemblies, and/or components are examined with regard to possible failures. Possible failure causes are assessed in terms of their failure effects. The likelihood of occurrence and detection is evaluated based on the planned actions. Design FMEA thus evaluates drafts of implementation documents (technical drawings, circuit diagrams...) and is conducted before these documents are approved. Design FMEA is not to be confused with Process FMEA, which analyzes risks in manufacturing processes. A joint method description by AIAG and VDA has existed for the automotive industry since August 2019.”
